Asian Arowana

Scleropages formosus; Asian arowana, Asian bonytongue (English); Pez lenguiheuso malayo (Espanol); Scleropage d’Asie (Francais).
Asian arowana are medium sized (maximum c. 60-90 cm total length) freshwater fish inhabiting large rivers, swamps, and lakes in Southeast Asia. Known natural range includes Cambodia, Lao PDR, peninsular Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Indonesia (Kalimantan and Sumatra). Asian arowana exhibit several natural color forms including red, green, golden, and silver. There is speculation, but not scientific confirmation, that these may represent genetically distinct subspecies. Wherever it occurs, the species may be naturally rare with each spawning population probably containing 100-200 individuals and entire watersheds supporting populations of thousands of individuals.
There has been no systematic survey work or quantitative assessments on wild populations.

Mystery of Asian Arowana
The arowana is popularly known to the Chinese as the Dragon fish because of its slender body and its distinct and reflective scales. To them, it does not simply resemble the mythical and mighty dragon but an incarnation of the dragon itself. Businessmen favour the arowana as pets, especially the Asian endemic ones, which they believe will bring them good luck and prosperity. They also strongly believe that the Asian Arowana brings them good health and happiness, casts out evil spirits and upholds family togetherness.
Asian Arowana was listed on Convention in Trade in Endangered Species of Flora and Fauna (CITES) in 1975 to protect asian arowana from extinction.
